Doylestown Periodontic Care – Dr. Beth Snyder

The American Academy of Periodontology cautions that half of all American adults suffer from a form of gum disease, the leading cause of tooth loss. Gum disease is a bacterial infection that destroys the fibers attaching your gums to your teeth and the bone that supports your teeth (called the alveolar bone).

Gum disease symptoms range from red, swollen gums (gingivitis) to infected pockets (periodontitis) to the necrosis of gingival tissues, the periodontal ligament and the alveolar bone. Studies also now point to a strong probable link between periodontal disease and other chronic systemic diseases, such as diabetes and heart disease. Early intervention is critical to controlling gum disease and preventing further health problems.

Signs of Gum Disease

You may have gum disease if you notice any of the following signs:

  • Bleeding while brushing
  • Red, swollen, puffy or tender gums
  • Persistent halitosis (bad breath)
  • Loose-feeling teeth
  • Pus between your gums and teeth
  • A change in the way your teeth fit together

Gum disease can be sneaky; in some cases there are no symptoms. Therefore, it’s important to schedule regular dental check-ups so a professional like Dr. Snyder can examine your teeth and gums.

Treating Gum Disease

If you have developed gum disease, Dr. Snyder and our team will first use ultrasonic scalers to wash the bacteria from your tooth with a pulsed water spray. Then, a soft tissue laser is used to neutralize the bacteria. Finally, an antibiotic is placed in the treated area to prevent the accumulation of more bacteria, and to help your gums reattach to your teeth.

Another common type of gum treatment is crown lengthening, in which gum tissue is removed to make your teeth look longer. Crown lengthening may be used to treat gum disease as well as improve the appearance of an overly “gummy” smile.
