Whether restoring a tooth to health or replacing an existing metal filling, there are a variety of non-metal restorations available. If your metal dental fillings are defective or show decay, it's important to replace them. If decay is left untreated, it may eventually lead to an infection (abscess).  The options in tooth colored restorations range from composite resins for smaller fillings to porcelain onlays and crowns for larger restorations. An onlay is like a smaller version of a crown where more natural tooth structure is left untouched and intact. The benefit to any of these is that they protect fragile tooth structure and are chemically bonded to your tooth restoring it back up to 97% of its original healthy strength. The American Dental Association's official position regarding silver amalgam is that it is a "safe, durable and cost-effective material that dentists have used in tooth restorations for more than 150 years."  Although the concern of toxicity has been studied resulting in this determination, it still may not be one's first choice for restoration.  Other factors must be considered.  Because it is a metal, the mercury in amalgam fillings expands and contracts with heat and cold, unlike resin composites that are bonded.  This movement may weaken and crack teeth.  Also, metal fillings detract from the appearance of the teeth, turning them dark and gray.  Simply put, it is our opinion that while the hazard of mercury in amalgam fillings is controversial, we choose not to use them since there are so many other great options.  This has been our policy since the late 1980's.
